INTERMEDIATE BIOLOGIST & PRACTICE TEAM LEADER
- Develop and lead environmental assessments and environmental impact assessments including technical support documentation during project planning, design and implementation phases consistent with the requirements of federal, provincial and local government legislation and policy;
- Perform project delivery activities such as survey field work, data collection, habitat inventories, habitat compensation or enhancement design and installations, construction environmental monitoring (and occasionally audits), literature review and report writing;
- Prepare applications to obtain various environmental permits, approvals and clearances associated with federal, provincial and local government policies;
- Develop monitoring plans and studies to confirm the compliance and effectiveness of environmental mitigation and compensation measures;
- Prepare proposals, including development of project scope and cost estimates, and participate in business development activities with existing clients;
- Work on multiple projects within a specific client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables; and
- Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agencies, land owners, Indigenous/First Nations communities, and clients during field activities to support clients in meeting regulatory requirements.
Skills / Qualifications
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree with direct experience in environmental assessment and conducting and managing riparian and aquatic studies (such as fish and fish habitat assessments, riparian assessments, development of construction environmental management plans (or equivalent) and water quality monitoring in both freshwater and marine environments);
- Knowledge and expertise of Federal, Provincial, and local government regulations, guidelines and best management practices with experience completing various government permit applications (such as Riparian Areas Protection Regulation; Species at Risk Act; the Fisheries Act; BC Water Sustainability Act; BC Environmental Assessment Act and/or Canadian Impact Assessment Act; and/or local government development bylaw applications);
- Knowledge and expertise with standards, guidelines and best management practices pertaining to survey methodologies and environmental assessments;
- Hold a professional designation with the BC College of Applied Biology (R.P.Bio.);
- Strong technical writing skills and experience providing technical review and edits as required;
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to simultaneously work on multiple tasks/projects and meet project deadlines;
- Self-motivated, responsible, technically-knowledgeable, and team-oriented; and
- Practical and proven experience working with civil contractors.
Additional Experience As An Asset
- Success working with a diverse range of clients from large industrial clients to developers to smaller residential clients;
- Certification and completion of training in electrofishing, riparian areas protection regulation, and/or erosion and sediment control;
- Implementing construction methodologies and best management practices related to in-water and/or upland construction;
- Experience with plant identification (riparian, wetland, aquatic and/or upland);
- Experience with hydroacoustic monitoring to confirm underwater sound thresholds are met for protection of aquatic species and marine mammals;
- Setting Marine mammal monitoring and exclusion zones during in-water construction;
- Experience completing Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, habitat compensation and/or habitat restoration design projects in BC (and other jurisdictions) according to provincial standards, guidelines and procedures; and
- Terrestrial biology experience including wildlife identification and wildlife habitat assessment to support various types of upland construction projects.
